Name: Ruan
Gender: Female
Personality: Ruan is a dreamer and an idealist. She's constantly absorbed in fantastic daydreams and odd tangents of thought, especially when left alone for extended periods of time. The sort to believe that life is one giant puzzle, in which all things are interconnected, she loves to while away the hours figuring it all out, and is even happier when she is able to share a conversation with someone else on this particular subject. She can be somewhat impractical at times, as emotion holds more power over her than reason, while still being a perfectionist. For those of a more logical mindset, this can be a bit irritating, and make Ruan difficult to compromise with once her mind has been made up. However, she does try to keep an open mind about everything, as long as her moral beliefs are not threatened.
Very emotionally intelligent, Ruan excels at reading moods and acting accordingly. She's quite charming, able to earn the favor of even the more anti-social with enough effort. She makes new friends very easily, and is rarely uncomfortable in any sort of social situation, be it involving only one other or an entire group. She knows her way around pretty much every sort of interaction and, while by no means manipulative, can adapt to just about everything in order to avoid trouble. As one who rather enjoys meeting new people, this skill can be very useful. She's always searching for somebody new to get to know, and is always very interested in others' motives and their personalities in general. However, this can occasionally lead to her being too focused on the meanings behind certain actions, and over-analyzing why someone did something.
Simultaneously laid-back and mildly eccentric, it comes as no surprise to Ruan if someone finds her to be a little... odd. She's never in much of a hurry to do anything- unless of course the situation demands it- and does what she can to ease the concerns of others. She believes in the idea of stopping to smell the roses, and as a result is not easily worried over things deemed insignificant. But, if for nothing else than to see how someone will react, Ruan can behave somewhat strangely at times, either in what she says or how she behaves. She simply finds watching the ramifications to be amusing and interesting.
With a far stronger interest in freedom and inspiration than security and stability, Ruan is something of a risk-taker. She's never afraid to try something new, even if it's uncertain whether or not it will actually work out well, and sees failures- even the most grievous ones- to be good learning opportunities. If there is one thing it can be said she hates, its being restricted. As a result, she has some trouble following authority figures, as she would often much rather go her own way than do exactly what she's been ordered to do.
A very strong faith in the worth of individual creatures is something else that characterizes Ruan. She sees life- no matter who or what it belongs to- as one of the most precious things there is. Dragons, humans, birds, fish, insects, it isn't all that important to her; all things have a right to grow, and no life is worthless. All have value, from the smallest of field mice to the greatest of dragons, and it greatly saddens her when someone fails or refuses to see this.
Appearance: Much like her parents, Ruan is a relatively small dragon. Excluding the length of her tail, she's about the size of your average quarter horse. She's also quite slim, almost to the point of appearing fragile with how skinny her legs and body are. However, looks aren't everything, and she makes up for her inherent lack of brute strength with speed and agility. Proportionally, her tail is exceptionally long, and will drag on the ground unless she's careful to pick it up in some way. Her feet, which resemble those of birds, sport three clawed toes each, with the addition of "thumbs" on the front pair that allow for some dexterity.
As far as coloration is concerned, it could be said that Ruan most closely resembles her father. While she does possess scales, they are minuscule and blend together to the point of being indistinguishable from skin unless closely inspected. These are predominantly inky black in color, although patches of grayish white can be found around her ribs, shoulders, the back of her neck, and part of the underside of her tail. In contrast, she scales on her underbelly are large and plate-like, and mostly white in color save for a separate row beneath her tail, which is bright red.
Also like her father, Ruan's wings are exceptionally large for her size. Generally bat-like in appearance (although they possess an additional number of fingers), they are mostly the same black as her scales, with sketchy bands of white between each finger. A small membrane also stretches over the elbow, and a sort of clawed thumb can be found at the top of both wings.
A pair of fins, compliments of her mother's genes, can be found on either side of Ruan's jaw, and another, much larger fin trails from the top of her head down the back of her neck. A patch of brilliant scarlet interrupts the black on this one, and all three have some range of folding and flaring ability (which often coincides with her emotions). A pair of long, faintly sloped horns sits on either side of the largest fin, black with streaks of more red on their undersides. Her muzzle is mostly black, but splotches of white appear around her eyes and the back of her jaw. In color, her eyes are a dark, rich shade of brown.
Rider: None. (Interested?)
Mother: Ysera (the Earth Elemental)
Father: Icarus (the Dark Elemental)
Siblings: Prism (half-sister- younger); Kession (half-brother- younger); Kysannis (half-sister- younger); Raven (half-sister- younger)
(Note: Ruan is about 125 years older than Prism and Kession.)
Other: As can be expected, the relationship that resulted in her birth was fairly brief. While she was a hatchling, Ruan was raised by her mother in the Earth Territory, but as she grew older and her affinity for Darkness became clearer, she was drawn more and more to her father's Territory. **
As both of her parents have some form of shape-shifting ability, it seems only natural that Ruan would have inherited some of it herself. However, this is not the case- not in the sense of transforming into other creatures, anyway. Instead, Ruan has the power to become a living shadow. In this form, she is entirely black, and almost appears as though she's made of some sort of mist or smoke. She can choose to either retain a three-dimensional shape, or flatten out onto any nearby surface, and can alter the solidity of her body as well. Additionally, she can stretch and mold her shape to an extent, and can fashion basic constructs out of her limbs, such as blades or small shields, but she still maintains the general shape of a dragon.
As far as the rest of her powers are concerned, though, she seems to have drawn something of the short end of the stick (at least with regards to things useful in combat). Like her father, she can manipulate shadows, and even make three-dimensional constructs out of them, but she cannot make them solid. Her breath weapon, rather than the green lightning of her mother, is the same chilling breath as her father's, and isn't good for much else than frosting things over. Furthermore, her Earth-related abilities are limited to empathic communication with animals (including dragons), and a sense for seismic activity or anything else that would cause vibrations in the earth. However, she doesn't see any of this as a disadvantage; she never liked fighting anyway.
